Every now and then it¡Çs patriotic to be unpatriotic. To find flaws and search for answers is what separates us from the communists, I mean, animals. We must always ask why. I¡Çm sure you spend ample time sticking it to the man and being a flower child. Oh yeah, this is 2007. Nobody cares, and rightfully so. I look forward to living out Waterworld and Tank Girl at the same time. Strata decided to leave a few tunes for the before/during/after party. Did I say party? I meant Armageddon.
Ahh, what an ominous intro! Presents The End Of The World isn¡Çt meant to be taken lightly, but the progressive-for-dummies format begs my attention a bit more than the thoughtful lyrics. Take haunting ¡ÈThe New National Anthem¡É and attempt to focus on the, umm, clever rewording of an American classic. Vocalist Eric Victorino¡Çs piercing tenor goes back and forth between the old ¡ÈNational Anthem¡É and his new version, spitting out lines like, ¡ÈI¡Çm not sorry if this makes you mad, in fact I hope this wakes you up – ¡ÆCause you¡Çll never see what¡Çs going on with your eyes so tightly shut!¡É All of this ironic blasphemy happens over pedal-riffic, atmospheric guitars and rolling fills. Nothing is what it seems. Obviously.
Hearing songs like ¡ÈCocaine (We¡Çre All Going To Hell)" and ¡ÈThe Dotted Line¡Ä¡É make me think the recording process for Strata wasn¡Çt a bunch of "Kumbaya" renditions and practical jokes. Each song more than flirts with distortion and blatant whining. The guitars continually rise and blend with Victorino until every ounce of sound embodies protest. And as some of you know, I hate that. A couple of songs here and there about bombs and government lies aren¡Çt going to change anything. My disillusioned mind might feel ¡Èproactive¡É for a few minutes, at least until Ninja Warrior comes back from commercial break. But I don¡Çt hate Presents The End Of The World. I feel compromised in a good way.
¡ÈComa Therapy¡É slows the tempo down and treats the listener to a strange love song. The timid singing and far-off, jangling guitars stifle the feeling of emotional attachment. It¡Çs almost like the two people hardly know each other, like none of us know each other (philosophical, brah). Then Victorino comes through with a shrill scream to begin ¡ÈPoughkeepsie, NY.¡É The song is about getting drunk with the devil. Seriously. I¡Çm not sure if this is a jab at religion or not, but the looping electronics and serial killer-esque vocals don¡Çt necessarily make me want to stick around and find out.
